Slimy Natto Pasta

Hello there, welcome to my new posting!

Today’s recipe, I’d like to use Japanese traditional food. Natto!

As some of you may know natto is kind of controversial food because it has interesting smell and looks, it has close relationship with Japanese people.

When I was a child, I remember eating natto with rice as my breakfast, school lunch, and whenever I need extra food to eat with rice. Also, I remember when I was older than 12 years old and cared so much about how boys and girls looked at me, I pretended I didn’t like natto because I was afraid of being looked as “a girl likes eating smelly odd food.”

Now I don’t care how I’m looked and don’t want to waste my favorite food, I cook food with natto, especially with spaghetti.
If you see natto as first time, you may feel this is kind of odd food, but trust me, this is so tasty and nutritional food you ever have.

  • ¼ cup of white dashi liquid
  • 4/3 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • ½ tablespoon potato starch
  • ½ tablespoon water

<Direction>

  1. Cook okra
    In a large pan, put plenty of water and bring it to boil. When the water is boiled, put okra and cook about 10min to fully cook okra. Drain and slice.
  2. Cook pasta
    As same as okra, put water in a large pan and add pasta when the water is boiled. Cook until the pasta is well softened.
  3. Season natto
    Open the packet and add sauce packet you found inside of natto packet. Mix well to make slimy texture.

    *usually natto packet has mustard and soy sauce, but mine had vinegar and soy sauce only so I added mustard.
    *if you like extra slimy texture, add 1 teaspoon of vinegar.

  4. Create sauce
    In a large pan, put every sauce ingredients and bring it to medium heat. When it is your desired thickness, remove from heat.
  5. Set out dish
    On a plate, put spaghetti, okra, natto and scallion. Sprinkle thinly sliced roasted seaweed, and pour sauce.

<Ingredients Memo>

Natto

Natto is a Japanese traditional food made from soybean fermented with Bacillus subtilis var. Natto. It has strong smell and slimy texture, but people from japan have very strong, long relationship with natto because they appeared as kids meal at home. Since it has funny smell, it is true that many of Japanese people list up natto as the worst food in Japan. But at the same time, natto has huge fan so people add them in omelet, pancake, soup, sushi, pasta, or toast. High in protein and fiber, so I recommend consuming it if you have digestion problem.
