Grilled Veggie Pizza

Happy National Pizza Day!
Did you know, today 2/9 is the day to appreciate our favorite Italian food, Pizza!!

Although pizza has huge fans all around the world, if you go to other places than your home country, they seem totally different.

In Japan, we have loaded toppings of vegetables, seafood, meat, or sometimes chocolates(!). Yes, I can see through your mind, you have a question about how expensive they could be, right? True, in my mind, pizza, especially delivery pizza like Domino or Pizza-la (second largest pizza chain in Japan) can cost you $25~$30 in a “medium” size pizza(It’s American small size, about 10 inch.) So I thought American people were loaded because they casually suggested ordering some pizza in the middle of the study group.

Now, I’m not loaded(just yet, dream big!) but got an idea of how to make pizza from scratch, with a variety of choices for toppings.

May I introduce you all to today’s food to be spotted in a light!

Grilled Veggie Pizza

<Ingredients>

Dough

  • 125g bread flour
  • 15g all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Sprinkles of salt
  • 70cc warm water

Sauce

  • 1 can san marzano style tomato
  • 1 hand basil
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 medium cloves garlic – sliced
  • Some salt and pepper

Toppings

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup eggplant – cut julienne
  • 1 jalapeno – deseeded, thinly slice
  • ⅛ red pepper – deseeded, thinly slice
  • 3~5 mushroom – thinly slice

<Directions>

  1. Get 1 teaspoon water from 70cc water and pour it over yeast. Mix well.
  2. Combine all other ingredients for dough and mix well to make a big ball. Knead for about 15 min.
  3. Combine the dough into a big ball. Transfer them in a warm place to make them rise to twice in size, for about 30 min.
  4. Prepare the sauce. Pour olive oil in a pan and add garlic. Bring it to medium heat and slowly infuse the aroma of garlic into olive oil. Carefully empty out the tomato can, add basil and cook for about 10 min.
  5. Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.
  6. When the dough rises, gently squeeze them. Make a ball once again and let it sit for about 20 min.
  7. Prepare toppings. Pour olive oil in a pan and cook eggplant, jalapeno, red pepper.
  8. Preheat an oven to 425°F.
  9. Spread the dough using a rolling pin or simply pull the dough to make it round.
  10. Spread sauce, place cheese and cooked veggies, and mushroom.
  11. Bake it in the oven for about 15 min. Enjoy!

<Cooking Tips>

  • Put the dough in a plastic container and float it over warm water when you let the dough rise.
  • If you like fluffy crust, let it rise for a while in room temperature after putting all toppings and dough together.
