September is National Papaya Day, so let’s enjoy some sweet fresh papaya this month! It’s also National Better Breakfast Month, so how about making some healthy and yummy smoothies?
I kinda feel guilty calling this for today’s recipe, but it’s my blog style so bear with me!
Ready to check the recipe? Let’s cook!
<Today’s Recipe>
Papaya Berry Smoothie
<Ingredients>
- ¼ papaya – trimmed and cube cut
- 1 cup frozen berries
- Some ice cubes
- 1 cup water
- Optional – Some sweetener like maple syrup, honey, or simple syrup (sugar: water=1:1)
<Directions>
- Combine all the ingredients together in a blender and let it work until the mixture is nice and smooth.
- Transfer the mixture in to a glass and decorate with some papaya. Cheers!
Hmm, so this is papaya. As I told you in a previous blog entry, some tropical fruits are unavailable as fresh in grocery stores in Japan, or even if they’re available, they are priced just like a gem. I remember I ate papayas when I was a kid, but only as a part of canned cocktail fruits, so when I found it in a grocery store in the US, I was like “OK, this is what real papaya looks like.” And I have to admit…after living in the US for more than 15 years, I finally gave it a try. Why did I wait to try papaya so long? That’s because they’re huge! I didn’t believe I could finish it all before it went wrong, so I just said “Hello, maybe next time” to papayas…and finally that “next time” came.
Maybe because I don’t know much about papayas, but I felt nurturing papaya till it’s perfectly ripe is difficult…? Just a slice of papaya wasn’t that sweet so I added frozen berries to make this smoothie. This experience reminded me of how my friend from Vietnam always says “Why are tropical fruits in the US always not sweet enough?” Until I try papayas or other tropical fruits like dragon fruits, dorians, passion fruits, I just dream about the taste and keep “must-try” recipes.
So for those who have tried papaya, I have a question…are papayas supposed to be sweet or not really, like the skin side of cantaloupe?

Well, the papaya I had eaten once wasn’t so sweet, so I did what I do with unripened cantaloupe, I added some organic sugar and let it sit on the counter for about 25 minutes, then it was delicious. Growers pick fruits far before they’re ripe because of demand, unfortunately many rot and get thrown away because the unripened fruit doesn’t taste very good. But I sure do want to try your drink recipe it sounds delicious, wonder if that would taste good with yogurt added?

Ah with yogurt sounds amazing too! 👀💕✨ With yogurt in it, the smoothie turns out to be probiotic food and perfect breakfast or morning snack😋
Thank you for telling me about marinating it with sugar before serving😊 Next time I get in such situation, I’ll try your way😍

In answer to your question Tanooki papaya here is a darker orange colour and doesn’t taste like the cantaloupe it’s far sweeter but they do make a lovely smoothie 🙂

Hi Carol! Where do you live? Sounds like you’re having pretty similar thing except the point that you described it far sweeter than cantaloupe🤔 I live in CA and supposedly it should have warmer climates, but the last papaya I had wasn’t sweet (or maybe I picked wrong one, didn’t nurture it till it perfectly ripe😳)

Looks delicious. Papaya is my fav fruit after mangoes. Ripe papaya are sweet . They come in diff sizes. In Hong Kong we discovered the small ones at the Wet markets ( five in a plastic container) and easy to have one daily for breakfast . In India too you get varieties in size & taste.

Oh really!? wow that’s good to hear! As we’re only 2 people household, buying papaya is a big deal😂 I heard Indian papaya and mangoes are heavenly sweet and yummy, so I’d visit there someday😌💕✨

That smoothie looks very delicious 🤤
We have fresh papayas here almost all year round. I can only speak for the papayas here, but these usually have a reddish or orange flesh with dark, round seeds. The flesh should be quite soft, a slightly bit slimy (I always have to be careful that the papaya doesn’t slip through the kitchen while I peel and cut it 😁) and taste very sweet. The consistency of the flesh is slightly softer than a Honeydew or Cantaloupe melon.
By the way, I recently read that papaya is pretty healthy as it contains some good enzymes. 🤩

Omg you just described what I was looking for in terms of good papaya!😍 That means you’re choosing right papaya and how to make it perfectly ripe at home. I’ll try getting another one with those traits! Thank you for thoroughly explaining about good papaya!😊💕✨
