Yes I’m late for 2 days, but here I am. Let’s talk about this year’s Earth Day with the theme “Invest in Our Planet” which is the same as last year.
Well, I feel guilty…because I’m the one destroying this beautiful planet. Ever since I gave birth to my little Miss Smiley a few weeks ago, the speed of our garbage bin to be full has been much quicker than ever.
A few culprits are:
- Disposable diapers (newborns pees/poops so many times! And I don’t know why but our baby pees/poops right after we changed diapers!!)
- Baby wipes(same as above. If it’s just pee, we can finish it with a sheet but not for poop)
- Disposable changing mats(we mainly use reusable mat but accident happens…a lot)
I’m loyal and honest to you(surprised? No, you’re not!) so I admit the culprit isn’t only baby stuff but…
- My postpartum pad(Maxi pads are as big as baby diapers(well, aren’t they?) I bled too much blood again in my 4th week of postpartum and had to have an emergency operation. That led my recovery from the delivery push back so I’m sure I’m using maxi pads and other medical supplies much more than other moms)
- Disposable sheets to prevent blood leaks (I ended up making a mess a lot from bleeding)
- Nursing pads(I’m sure I’m NOT producing much milk like other moms but milk leak happens so I need them)
- Food packages(meal preparation and eating need to be done quickly before the baby demands another feed. We’re eating much more ready to eat food and typically they have more packages than making from scratch kind of homemade food)
Garbage is not the only reason but…
- Water to hand wash baby clothes/bibs/burp clothes/crib sheets (same as above…sometimes…ahem, quite frequently they’re only in use for a few sec. She spits up milk a lot!)
- Laundry detergent(exactly same reason as above)
- Frequent change of our clothes(even after 1 hr from last feed, baby spit up milk when we hold up baby)
- Frequent change of towels(as long as diaper change is frequent plus before and after each feed, we need to wash our hands so towels get soaked up quite quick)
etc etc…I have reusable clothes diapers and nursing pads, but I wonder if they’re really eco-friendly since we’d be using a lot of water and detergent. Also if I need to hand wash them, I’m risking my hands with eczema…meaning I’d use extra gas to see my dermatologist later.
Well, so many excuses to justify my current action. Also if I need to list up the disposable anything that I used at the hospital, the list adds up to hundreds. Sometimes I talk about the importance of keeping this planet beautiful, but now I’m doing totally inconsistent things and that makes me feel bad.
Now I’m reflecting on my everyday life to make up for these shames, and phew, there are a few things I’m doing right.
The first one is that we changed our garbage bag from the traditional plastic one to an eco-friendly, compostable bag. According to the brand, the garbage bag is made from plant-based materials and will completely break down as the time goes by. We’ve just started to use them but I’m sure this move is the right thing for our planet.
Also we’ll keep the easy, basic way in terms of our eating habit: cook just the right amount of food for us to prevent making leftovers. If there are any leftovers, just enjoy the second serving in the next meal by thanking the beautiful harvest, or transform leftovers to another food!
It’s too early at the moment but when my baby grows a little more, we’ll definitely teach her it’s important to be friendly to the Earth.
Is there anything you can think of and want to give me some advice? Please feel free to share it in the comment! It’s much appreciated:)

Thank you dear! Probably postpartum mood swing, but every time I see our garbage bin, I feel like it is complaining to me like “oh nooooo the bag is already full!? Really!? It used to take a week or so, do you remember that!?” 🤣🤣🤣

I raised 4. Our household has produced it’s share of trash! My best advice is as soon as the little one is old enough taking out the trash becomes their responsibility. 🤣🤣🤣

ohhh wowww 4!? That is absolutely blessed thing for you, I’m sure you’re the expert of how to raise kids👀💕 I bet your house is filled with cheerful voice and countless happiness! And yeah that definitely sounds like a great plan😂 She’d be complain how heavy the trash bin gets and would make her think about how to reduce them🤣

Every day is Earth Day! With compostable bags, I cannot dawdle about taking the garbage out or they will break down on me!

Oh yes Geoff, I agree that every day is Earth Day🙌✨ and a~haha! I can relate to that since with compostable bag only allows to hold garbage for only a couple of days. If I forget to bring it to outside bin they will break down on me😂

Your descriptions of all of the waste that comes with babies took me back to when I was going through that situation. However, my wallet couldn’t afford paper diapers so I used cloth with plastic pants. When I rinsed them I wore plastic gloves. Earth safe detergent wasn’t a thing then, in fact there wasn’t much on the market that was earth friendly then. You’re doing great! I have a recycling service now so a great deal of what I use is recycled. I use plastic storage bags, but I clean and reuse them until they fall apart. I use chemical free dish soap and laundry detergent and I use washable microfiber cloths so I use minimal paper towel and I’m about to convert to recycled paper towels. I’mma sure you already do all of these things. I did make some amazing sugar free chocolate zucchini muffins a couple of weeks ago, the recipe includes a mashed banana and raw honey to sweeten. Happy’s belated earth day!

Exactly for that taking advantage of recycling service and earth friendly detergent! It is so good that a lot of companies started to focus on creating sustainability products that also allow the basic functions to support our everyday life🌱💕
So Laura, did clothes diapers worked well? I did some research about clothes diapers and a lot of moms told it’s cheaper and better for babies skin as well…in long perspective. I have a couple of clothes diapers which I got as a sample, but I chickened out for initial investment I have to commit. They said we need to have at least 30 diaper inserts…and they’d wait for me to wash, right? I haven’t convinced to use them yet haha😂 I wish I remember what I felt for using clothes diapers since I grew up wearing clothes diapers when I was a baby😵💫
And that sugar free chocolate zucchini muffin sounds so good👀💕 with honey and banana, must be so healthy yummy! 🤤🤤🤤

So cloth diapers did work well, but there are a few things to do that make it easier for you. After rinsing the dirty diaper, I put them in a diaper pail, it was tall and had a lid. I usually washed diapers twice a week. There are detergents just for diapers that are more gentle than regular detergent and now they’re eco friendly. Now I lived in a house so I hung them out to dry on a clothes line so the sun could whiten them more and they were fresher. I also changed a bit more frequently, this is after the baby poops all the time period lol. I did keep ointment for diaper rash especially during the warmer months, I lived in central Arizona. When I went anywhere, I carried a large zipper plastic bag in the diaper bag. I know they’re a bit more work than paper diapers, but looking back I’m glad I didn’t contribute to the trash pile with a product that isn’t recyclable.
If you’d like that muffin recipe (they’re very easy to make) I’d be happy to share it with you. ❣️

Oh wow, thank you for the tips Laura, I’ll discuss it with my husband and which way we’re going in terms of eco-friendly and whether we can do it in a long period of time…Our baby is newborn and thinking that she’d need to wear diapers at least 2 yrs there should be a big debate topic!🤣
And yes that would be great! Please share the muffin recipe! I’d bake it for my snack while baby takes nap😋🤤😋

Don’t feel guilty, dear Tanooki. You’re thinking about these things. That’s already more than most people do.
Maybe I have a small suggestion for you:
As far as baby wipes are concerned, I only used them when traveling. At home, I had small cotton washing cloths which used with water only, then I washed them under hot water directly after use and later with a disinfectant laundry detergent without perfume at 90 degrees. Of course without any softener as these aren’t good for baby’s skin. I used white vinegar in the softeners compartment. It’s much better, less expensive, kills smells and even disinfects the laundry, too.
My son was always clean and never had any troubles with his diapers. Many babies get skin problems while they wear diapers, but that’s not because of the diapers, but because of the stuff they put in the wipes. 😉
Enjoy the time with your little one 💕😍

Thank you Livia for such an amazing advice!! 🙌💕
Wow using the wash clothes…we bought them but haven’t have used them that much because I didn’t know what to do with them👀💕
Yes it definitely sounds convenient and effective for both to the earth and our budget🤩 That’s win-win❤️ As summer comes, I worried about she gets diaper rush too so definitely try it from today👍

You’re most welcome, dear Tanooki. I’m happy if my experiences may be interesting for you, too. 😍
I can guarantee you that my son never ever had any troubles with heat and diapers, and we were passing quite a lot of time in Italy where temperatures were around 35 Celsius or even more during summer. 😉
I am not sure if perhaps the fact that I never used any baby powder or any baby creams and lotions etc. also contributed to the fact that my son never had skin troubles. 🤔
Have a wonderful weekend, you and your whole little family 🥰

Thank you Livia! Yes definitely your experience is interesting and that led calling to my new action!
My husband loves no baby powder/cream/lotion to protect her as much as possible since he knew what it’s like to have skin problem by looking at my hands(ha, eczema!) so hopefully we’ll start using wash clothes instead of wipes and can protect her skin too!
Hope you had a great weekend too and having an amazing week too😘💕✨

Thank you, dear Tanooki. 🙏
Oh, yes, if you tend to have eczema, I would absolutely stay away from these products. Your husband is absolutely right! 👍 There’s so many bad ingredients that they put in baby products, and which can irritate baby’s skin. It’s unbelievable. 😞
Have a wonderful rest of the week and hugs to your whole little family 🤗

Yes I totally get the fact that baby grow up fast! When she reached 1 month milestone we listed up how she changed, and there were more than 30😂
I got many advice from my friends here so I’ll try them, including your advice of love and enjoy the time with her👍💕✨
