Happy Valentine’s Day!…Wait, Can We Really Say It’s “Happy”?

Happy Valentine’s Day!

This is one of the days that people either LOVE or HATE…Well I know my readers are on LOVE side, let me explain why Valentine’s Day is sometimes hated.

Unwanted mandatory gift giving from female to male in workplace

In Japan, we have a tradition of a mandatory gift giving (although no one say you have to, but yes, you HAVE TO!) from women to male co-workers/bosses even if there is no special feelings. I’m not sure if this tradition still exists today since people are getting liberal. If it is, ladies have to visit some stores and buy some gifts, usually a fancy set of chocolate in a special box, meaning much more pricey than usual. It’s true that ladies buy extra for themselves too, but the budget completely comes from their pockets. The happiness of having sweets only lasts for about a min after they popped in those chocolate candies…burning the extra calories from those chocolate candies takes so much longer than anyone can think of.

Unwanted mandatory gift giving back awaits a month later.

March 14th is called “White Day” in Japan, and this is the day that those who got some gift from ladies have to give something back. The situation is the same: gifts are pricey, stores get crowded, and again, all the budget comes from their own pockets. Some ladies are suffer on the day before White Day too because if they’re married, they’d be asked to buy “something…anything” for someone she doesn’t even know.

Restaurants get extra crowded even though the menu is “special” too (in price)

This happens both in Japan and the US. These special menus for Valentine’s Day appear as soon as the calendar hits February, and the menu itself looks not so special but the price gets special…in the upper direction. I had worked as a waitress in both countries, and I gotta tell you…if you have to work on Valentine’s Day, It’s going to be an extra stressful day because customers are mostly couples, meaning smooching everywhere! I really didn’t know where to look at TBH…

Mainly the “gift” is a box of chocolate candies, meaning extra sugar!

It’s good that around Valentine’s Day, a lot of stores collaborate with well-known chocolatier from all around the world and only a limited time “oh-are-you-a-box-of-jewelry” type of chocolate candies gets available. But! They’re chocolate, meaning sugar dense(if it’s not dark chocolate) so someone has to worry about extra calorie intake and dentist appointments around that time.

Chocolate also contains caffeine.

So, I’m making an unwanted excuse this year and probably next year too. As I am pregnant, I have to limit caffeine intake and this limiting caffeine thing will probably continue for 2 years for nursing. I recently had a nursing class and the instructor said we can have caffeine (or even alcohol as long as there is a 2 hrs gap!) but my husband doesn’t approve of it…dear chocolate, let’s wish he takes an unexpected nap so that I can see you!

Is making a homemade gift good? Probably yes, if you keep 1 important factor.

If you’re making homemade Valentine’s Day treats to your love, make sure it’s a bite size. When I was a kid, I made a special chocolate candy. What was the special, you ask? The size! It’s almost as big as a wrestler’s palm and the thickness was over 1 inch. That chocolate candy had no addition of nuts or creams. I melted chocolate, and cooled it to set. A lethal weapon for teeth! I gave it to my brother since I thought he was a perfect scapegoat…ahem, to show thanks and love, but as soon as he realized the size and how hard it was, he never touched it again but put it in the very back of the fridge. I didn’t want to waste it, so I tried to eat, and gave up…if you don’t know it yet, let me tell you, chocolate could be as hard as a diamond! So if you’re making homemade chocolate candies, make it as small as possible so that your prince charming can just pop it and melt it in his mouth!

Although I have to admit I love going to Valentine’s Day shopping because just being around fancy looking sweets makes me feel excited, there are many downsides to think about too…

So who’s enjoying Valentine’s Day this year? Enjoy…without me haha!

What’s your opinion towards Valentine’s Day? I’d love to hear it!

This is fascinating! Mandatory gifts to male bosses is wrong on every level – but everyone has strange customs in their culture that still haven’t been “fixed” – as for the candy and chocolate element, do what I did and make delicious bacon roses! We also order the heart-shaped pizza from Lou Malnati’s in Chicago – shipped to us and delicious! Happy day to you!

  4. Went to post a letter in Tokyo yesterday (Valentine’s Day!) and was given a small Gift pack of chocolates by the female postal clerk. Unfortunately I won’t be here to return the favour on White Day and she may not be on duty either!

I stopped reading at “you are pregnant “. !!! Congratulations 🎉
I haven’t been on much so I must have missed it.

By the way, I’m not a Valentines person but I did like when my coworkers would share their chocolates with single(back then) people. 💝🍫

Haha yes, I have 3 more weeks to go or probably sooner😆 My belly is getting the size of whole watermelon but I feel my baby is complaining she needs more room to stretch😂

Ah we did exactly the same! We call it “tomo-choco” literally meaning friendship chocolate. Strange enough, these tomo-choco were much fancier than the one to be given to boys😂

Only a little longer for you. How exciting! I remember some of those end of pregnancy feelings, like all the kicking and moving around.

I love that idea of “tomo-choco” That sounds better than exchanging Valentine candy. Maybe that should be a tradition here as well. 🙂

Best wishes for a happy delivery 🙂

Yes definitely!! These kicking and moving around especially in the middle of night and early morning makes countless of sleepless night already😂 I seriously think she would break water but every article says it never happens, so I truly think my baby and me would be the first ones🤣

Yes I love tomo-choco custom too! It’s like our version of Halloween😋💝🍡🍮

Thank you, a few more weeks…💕

I remember the night time acrobatics! 😅 My boys kept me up with all the tumbling and kicking. I thought they were going to just fall out of me 😂 I could see my stomach move.
Some foods would make them move more.

Good luck to you on a happy and speedy delivery 🍼❤️

That’s the best valentine’s day ever huh?👀✨ Enjoy pasta with lots of your grand-daughter’s love! (and I don”t know if she knows it, but on White Day it’s your wife’s turn…probably with your help!👍🍝✨)

Huh, that’s interesting. I always thought that on Valentine’s day, everywhere in the world, the women are the ones who get the presents. 🤔
    I don’t like Valentine’s day because it’s mainly a commercial rip off.
My husband and I haven’t ever celebrated it because we have the opinion that you either respect and love each other throughout the whole year or, if you don’t, it’s useless to pretend that you do on that one day of the year. 😉
My aunty from the US just wrote me that she read that the money that is made with Valentine’s stuff like presents, dinners and such in the US is several billions. 🤯
Besides that, I can also imagine how this day must be for someone who is single. 🤯

But I still hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s day, dear. 😍😍

    1. Tanooki says:

Haha yes, this is why I was so surprised when I finally learned Valentine’s day is typically the day for men to give presents to female on Valentine’s day!! We have a total opposite situation on Valentine’s day gift giving🤣

I agree with you about valentine’s day is getting commercial rip off…the exactly same statement that my husband says to me every year!😂 That’s amazing to hear gift/dinner on Valentine’s Day reaches several billions👀 For economical POV, probably it’s good to move the economy a little bit…by thinking about February tends to have the lowest sales throughout the year in most field🤔

Haha yes! As I’m huge fan of Rumiko Takahashi, I know Ranma 1/2 and that episode!!😂 I’m surprised Japanese manga got so popular among people who live in outside of Japan😳

☺️ I don’t think I’ve watched all the episodes, though.

I think I was in my teens when I started reading manga.

Yeah, I think some animés have been shown on TV (like Dragonball, Voltes V) since the 80s!

I used to watch, but I haven’t the time anymore. I liked the older and darker ones, though.

Haha same here! I used to watch them a lot but no time, so sometimes people want to know what anime I recommend, I’d sound too classic🤣
