Happy National Pancake Day! Today is the day to appreciate our popular breakfast item: Pancakes!

I heard pancakes were super popular with young people in Japan a few years ago. As I look back at what pancakes (or we call them hot cakes) looked like in my household, they’re just simple, flat, and big ones to share with family members. We usually made them with a portable electric skillet set on the dining table, and we had them with melted butter or honey. While we’re working on the first batch, another one was being baked and my mind was already on the second one! Pretty simple, but I liked them because these hot cakes were only available at weekends’ brunch.

The aromatic, fluffy, warm hot cakes kinda morning was special to me, but the recent boom of pancakes in Japan is actually more attractive to me because…well, they got a mountain of whipped cream on the side! Some say they don’t know if they’re really eating pancakes or whipped cream, but that’s an extravagant whining…I’m just too jealous of them!

Even if I want to create this kind of pancakes on my own, not at this moment…and probably it lasts another 2 years or so while I’d be nursing our baby. Yes, the countdown for the day has started!

When I talk about our baby or plans for newborn care with my dinner buddy AKA husband, I still feel like I’m dreaming TBH. I even wake up in the middle of the night and am surprised at my growing big belly. Somewhere in my mind I still think I have a flat belly(by comparing current one) so I get wide awake when I touch it and get even more surprised that it is moving from inside.

Anyways, let’s get back to the talk of food since I know there are many foodies out there. So when there is a pancake, what is your first choice of toppings? It depends on what’s available at the moment of course, but if I had a magical fridge where anything is stored, I’d choose whipped cream…more is better, and must be whipped on my own…aerosol version of whipped cream melts so quickly!!

(By the way, I have a question for New Yorkers…is it true that people must be 21+ years old to get this kind of whipped cream? I’m not interested in nitrous oxide but CREAM!!)

To me, it’s so weird that a lot of articles and lactation consultants are saying dairy products are tricky for nursing moms, but they’re experts…I should obey this time, until my desire for cloud-like fluffy pancakes with whipped cream bursts.

So at this moment, I already have in mind what to eat after I’m done with pregnancy and nursing…it’s 3 layers of fluffy pancakes with several scoops of coffee ice creams(caffeine), AND a mountain of whipped cream(dairy. I won’t allow vegan whipped cream or fat free whipped cream!) I’m ok without sushi, brie cheese or other stuff that pregnant women can’t eat, but no dairy products? It’s going to be a tougher time by considering so-called sleepless nights in the first 6 weeks or so!

I told my dinner buddy AKA husband about it, and he was like “about 2 years from now huh? I’m sure you won’t remember that and eat whatever is available. If you remember it, I’d put a cherry on the top for you!”

So everyone, if you’re making ultimate favorite types of pancakes, what toppings are the must? Let’s exchange ideas so that we can explore more about how to enjoy pancakes!

Happy National Pancake Day! Enjoy the final day of February with some yummy pancakes:)

Pancakes are such a versatile and delicious item that I make for both breakfast and dinner. Toppings I use are my homemade jam, fresh fruit combinations such as blueberries made into a warm topping, strawberries cooked with sugar and orange rind grated in, a cooked apple compote, just powdered sugar ( with my pumpkin pancakes) and sometimes I add raw wildflower honey. I’ll bet you’re anxious and excited to welcome your newest family member. Keep taking good care of yourself and remember you’re already a great mom taking such great care of your baby. 🤰❤️

Ahhh I think I told you already, but you always make my mouth water🤤🤣🤤😋🤤 Especially that cooked strawberry and grated orange rind?? This is what I want right now!!👀✨❤️🍊🍓 Thank you for sharing your idea, I definitely make one soon🤤

And yes…it’s funny but I’m excited for a few seconds and anxious for a few seconds…that mixture of feeling happens on and off and on!🤣 Thank you for cheering me up! I’m planning to give a birth in natural birth way(the mainstream birthing method of using epidural sounded too scary for me so it’s going to be just-in-case plan😜) so I gotta be prepared for managing pain and a big excitement to finally welcoming her in our family! 👶🍼

    1. Tanooki says:

Ahhh sure!! I heard Canadian maple syrup has so many kinds depending on color and clarity etc, so when I visit Canada some day, it’s on my to-do list to check maple syrup aisle in grocery stores and find what I like! (Probably it’d take at least half an hr in front of a row of maple syrup…do you think my guess is correct?🤣🍁)

How much longer before the baby is due?

    1. Tanooki says:

9 more days! We think she’d be arriving earlier than that (for basically no reason but we both were born earlier than our due date) but Dr told me about the study saying that for 1st time mom, the most possible going-on-labor date falls 40 weeks and 4 days! Let’s see…💘

I’m very curious because you write that you can’t eat dairy products during pregnancy and nursing, but why? Usually, everything is pasteurized, and when I was pregnant, I was told that problems could only arise from non-pasteurized dairy products. Has that changed or is the reason a completely different one? 🤔
Wishing you all the best for the “final stage” 🥰

    1. Tanooki says:

Yes that’s what I have to make sure again with my lactation consultant after my baby arrives!👍 Thank you for bringing it up, I have to show your comment to my lactation consultant😉

In nursing class took place in a few weeks ago, the instructor told about it. Yes, in most cases dairy products are pasteurized, but their concern is different…According to her and a few of my research, consuming a lot of dairy products can trigger clogging mammary gland, and cause allergic problem for some sensitive babies. When I was a kid I had to see dermatologist quite often for my skin problem, so I’m worried that would be passed to her too…well, we’re not sure if that was caused by dairy products though because it was old time and allergy was looked not quite seriously.

Also it’s true that a lot of articles saying different things…some say it’s totally ok, some say it’s on the list of “be careful” and I ran across a few bloggers telling they actually had to see Dr after consuming dairy products (like frappe with whipped cream.) Fortunately or unfortunately, my husband was right next to me during the class and he is super protective especially about my diet during pregnancy and nursing, so at this moment we both consider dairy products are to be limited😫

I think I should update about this info after I talk with lactation consultant. Internet brought us the benefit to make a lot of information available like shower but also drawback to make people confused with right/wrong info all over the place!😂

      1. Livia says:

Thank you very much for your detailed explanation, dear Tanooki. It’s indeed very interesting, but also confusing, how the recommendations can be totally different, based on where you get them from. How lucky was I, being pregnant when the internet didn’t know that much, yet. 😁

I actually thought that the reason why dairy is a no go could also be something like too many antibiotics being used in the dairy industry or such.

But you and your husband are absolutely right, dairy products can of course be an allergen, especially if somebody is sensitive, so always better be safe than sorry. 💕

      2. Tanooki says:

Yes I totally agree! Other than that of taking dairy products while nursing, there are so many different recommendations/suggestions available depending on where you live…and for me with background of Japanese culture, sometimes they’re so confusing!😂

Ah antibiotics! Probably that point is included👀 Thank you again for bringing up, I gotta make a list of questions before the day comes! We may only stay at the hospital for a day here in the US while we tend to stay at the hospital for a week in Japan, so gotta be organized of what is needed before leaving hospital👍✨

      3. Livia says:

Oh, really? Just one day in the US? 😳 My son’s birth was without any complications, and I still had to stay 4 days at the hospital until I finally could go home. Has that always been like this in the US or could it be related to Covid or such?

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Tanooki says:

Yes, I heard it’s just 1 day stay after giving birth in the US if there isn’t any complication, the covid situation isn’t a problem here😂 With C-section, typically 5 days stay but my Dr said even with C-section 3 days…but 1 day stay is the most common case and I was surprised too😵‍💫

I think here in the US, being in-patient is kept pretty short. I actually had surgery a few years ago and even though I had several medical tools attached, I was discharged the next day and had to go back to the hospital to remove all the equipment🤣 That was the hardest week ever in my life (and to my husband too I guess)

Did you give a birth in Indonesia? I wonder if 1 day stay after giving birth only happens in the US too🤔

      5. Livia says:

I gave birth almost 20 years ago in Germany. Unfortunately, I have no idea how it this is managed in Indonesia. But one day seems a bit too short to me. In Germany, they also wanted to supervise closely how lactation was going, and if my son was putting on enough weight during the first few days, as well as giving him the first vaccines. Since I lived out in the country and my husband had to work all day long, I was ok with staying at the hospital. At least I had some help during the first few days of getting accustomed to the completely new situation. 😊

      6. Tanooki says:

Yes that’s exactly same as in Japan and the US for getting prepared to take baby home safely! And the length you can stay at the hospital in Germany sounds pretty much same as in Japan, and I’m glad to know you were OK by staying at the hospital with all the help you needed😍

I definitely agree, the US situation of just 1 day stay sounds too short…So I’m hoping the people who will teach me newborn care isn’t like Billy’s Boot Camp : yelling, cheering, military-like teaching style🤣

Congratulations!!! What an exciting time for you both!
Pancakes are a household favourite. I whip up the batter with wholemeal flour and cook it a little differently for the various tastes: the children like cheese & chives in theirs, eaten with bacon/sausage; Loving Husband prefers his straight up, slathered with butter, with a tiny drizzle of maple syrup; I have mine usually with fruit, blueberries or bananas, sometimes both.
